just in time for summer, pampa issued aimlessness, the long-awaited new album from dntel aka los angeles producer jimmy tamborello. his latest electronic suite brought forth stronger leanings toward house grooves, building upon the pop and idm approaches he explored earlier in his career as half of the postal service and a member of figurine - with a healthy dose of pampa otherworldliness on top. now, robag wruhme steps in and recontextualizes two aimlessness cuts for a remix ep. wruhme is already a beloved member of dj koze’s extended family, having released the full-length thora vukk about one year ago, which was deemed another success for both him and pampa” in resident advisors four-star review. first up is robags kloff mottüré mix of bright night, a starry-eyed transformation of dntels work that twinkles like fireflies in the clear midnight sky.with symphonic splashes, playful pitter-patters and a tranquil breakdown, it sounds a bit like teenage toads skinny-dipping amongst the lilypads. next up, robag finds inspiration in dntels jitters,not once but twice: the marf labo mix takes the title quite literally,offering a jittery breakbeat interpretation with a metallic angel chorus swirling over the haphazard beats. finally, on the flip side,the emmens worsch mix brings things more closely aligned with the grooving, heartfelt house thump that pampa has engendered. its the eps most dj-friendly cut, while at the same time showing off robags gentle production touches and letting tamborellos sweet, subdued voice shine through.

so what is after the void ... we bang the bomb of course with a lady in a thong surrounded by snakes and hand grenades, obvious really! having been away for some time it appears that a light sounds dark spring is in the air. en route to their next destination (rumoured to be a dark subterranean world full of nasty mutants danger electrified tracks out this summer) with arms out the window and the mothership roof down, its full steam ahead and proper european dance music time. not really train spotting as before although a couple are a bit off piste like maltas very own ian dury by the name of iain richardson rapping about sitting on a green bus! much more like it however are classic italo covers of big in japan, gloria, a wonderful new wave version of falcos euro smash der kommissar and the thoughts massive german hit wait a long time sounding like some long lost talk talk record. light sounds dark do some minor tweaking (going for that natural look) to big beast anthems axodrys you and colme 111s you take me high (early euro take on chicago) and for lovers of something a bit more funky theres some groovy goings on from kraut funksters epsilon urging people to leave the city which might not be a bad idea if the water runs out.

following last years triumphant debut on untolds imprint hemlock, brighton based producer guy andrews is back with his first 12 inch for hotflush recordings. a superb followup to his 2011 auditory missive, the wait / hands in mine merges percussive elements with heavy basslines resulting in two dark dancefloor cuts. shuffling and persistent, side a is bass-driven track filled with arpeggiated goodness, while on the flip, andrews shows off his ability to manipulate genres by using a bass kick and frenzied rhythmic percussion to dial up an atmospheric tune. with recent acclaim from xlr8r, resident advisor and truants along with dj and radio support from the likes of benji b, l-vis 1990, brackles, sound pellegrino, shortstuff, benjamin damage and throwing snow, guy andrews is on the rise. lookout for another 12 inch via hotflush this fall.

thinking too much/where the helios is juk juks second release on nommos. thinking too much is the most direct juk juk release so far. its peak time fare, aimed squarely at the dancefloor. the dreamy intro will fool the unsuspecting, sucking them in and propelling them on a tripped out ride on a techno ghost train, buffered by a cushion of warm throbbing bass. where the helios is the real dream side. a floating, hallucinogenic, spaced out drift, driven by a crisp, pared back rhythm and a gorgeous, woozy vocal- led melody. juk juks first release for nommos was unwrap/fall and before that his debut, winter turn spring/frozen, was put out by kieran (four tet) hebden on his highly regarded text label. all juk juks output to date has been critically acclaimed, coverage including fact magazine, pitchfork, mix mag, abeano, the fader amongst others. his releases have also received significant club and radio plays including mainstream radio 1 support from admirers giles peterson and rob da bank, who has promised support for this release. four tet said the room went off when playing thinking too much at a recent event.

record store day is synonymous with exclusive and limited releases and this year is no different. featuring a collaboration ep with adrianyounge from venice dawn and black dynamite fame and adrian quesada from the echocentrics, ocote soul sounds, brownout and grammy-winning grupo fantasma. a first name is not all adrian younge and adrian quesada share, they also both have an equal love of the psychedelic, the cinematic and at the root of it all, soul music. so it was inevitable that a collaboration would eventually come to fruition. mutual admirers of each others work, they first met at the sxsw music festival while on the same bill. both began their production careers on mpc and taught themselves various instruments to further capture the symphonies heard in their heads. fresh off his current solo project something about april under the moniker venice dawn, adrian younge found time to create all new tracks with adrian quesada who just released his echoland tribute to timbaland with the echocentrics. although both are distinct artists in their own right, they are cut from the same cloth with a signature sound thats equal parts morricone, early portishead, wu-tang and 60s psychedelic cinema soundtracks. their combined efforts on this ep guarantees a double dose of the sound we have come to expect from these talented individuals.

london based welshman chamboche returns to the label that launched him with the smoke screen ep. his unquantifiable sound swerves genre classification, hovering around house but with enough musicality to please the hardened disco head. swirling pads and a bubbling bass line set down the groove, while keys fall around horns and vocals to make the lead track a refined, uplifting work out. slowly unfolding, the track is hypnotic and absorbing, showcasing the style of a producer as able to work the mind as the hips. bicep toughen up the drums and work the arpeggio, stripping down the track and bringing the chicago influence higher in the mix. while the original subtly unfolds, their remix demands attention from the outset, building to a climax then recoiling for another bite at the cherry. thinking big, krl ramps up the intensity with a bright, kinetic reworking. aimed squarely at the peak time, he harnesses all of smoke screen’s most propulsive elements to really work the floor. tucked away on the b side is the expansive mind your mind. trademark chamboche percussion is woven around a blissful riff, swelling majestically to round off the ep in slo(w) burning euphoria.

tresor records marks its 250th release with a very special project indeed. continuing to forge ahead whilst remaining ever mindful of its legacy, tresor proudly presents infiniti - the remixes: a trilogy of classic cuts and new reworks from one of its original detroit linchpins juan atkins. dubbed as his pure techno project, atkins produced two full-length albums under the infiniti moniker-the infiniti collection, released by tresor in 1996, and skynet two years later. 16 years on and they are as relevant today as they were pioneering then, brought further up-to-date here with a series of fresh takes from some of technos pioneering and esteemed figures: thomas fehlmann, tv victor, function, redshape, sleeparchive and the re-release of dubtechno vanguard moritz von oswalds remix of >think quick<, originally released in 94 on metroplex. part two picks up the pace, heading further down the timeline with >flash flood< - originally released in 1995 as part of one of the labels famous annual compilations, re-edited by sandwell districts function. skynets punchy classic on the flip, >skyway< rounds off the ep with a killer old-school remix by technos masked crusader redshape.

march sees the formidable hypercolour deliver its most surprising output yet, an ep from none other than groove armada. tom findlay and andy cato need little introduction as groove armada. chart smashes, huge live tours and being part of the worldwide electronic music history aside, the duo have never lost touch with their acid house roots and have continued to be devoted to record buying, djing and the much maligned promo trawl. tom and andy have been avid followers of the label it seemed, since its inception. it was through label head jamie, meeting the guys back in 2010 at space in ibiza, and then continued communication via hypercolour promos, that led to an out-of-the-blue email requesting an informal hook up in east london and, within just a few days, a release was scheduled. that release is the >no knock ep<, four tracks that range from 808 fuelled old school cuts to low slung, moog-bassd electronic funk. each sound is lovingly crafted but there is an analog rawness throughout and every track has the sort of tweaked, off-kilter and occasionally awkward vibe that hypercolour do so well. it just takes a bit of imagination to guess what a ga release on hypercolour should sound but failing that, just check the release out as it wont disappoint.

its been a while since we have seen a release from dfrnt for on the edge, but im proud to announce, the wait is finally over! this ep provides us with an abundance of different flavours, but still retains the genius sound that is dfrnt at the very core of every tune. let me first draw to your attention to >the big freeze<. its a drum and bass track that has been moulded like a true pro. it sounds like dfrnt has been producing d+b for a long time with the finishes on this track, but believe its one of his earlier efforts. its a refreshing bpm for his take on electronic music and hope to hear more of the same from dfrnt soon. then dfrnt shows us what he is all about when he goes all out 4x4. a dirty, gritty techno roller (with a skip) that will blow your socks off! love the production on this one. then we have >monday morning<. this does exactly what it says on the tin, just the type of tune you need to bring you down after a heavy weekend. as though that wasnt enough, there is a 170 remix from man of the moment, indigo! support comes from: hatti vatti, synkro, versa, mary ann hobbs, kissy sell out, fused forces, loxy, dj rum, 501 and truth to name a few.

formed in 2007 this duos djing and production skills have gone from strength to strength.
starting out on fling recordings, their first release miniminds was supported by mr c, being played in dc10 all summer followed by a radio 1 essential selection airplay by pete tong. later down the line xoe was used by mason in his radio 1 essential mix.

for the fourth ep on austere, irelands slowburn are welcomed into the fold. having impressed us with releases on uzuri and elektrosouls this ep will not disappoint fans of the label to kick things off we have the the hustle which sounds like something that prescription forgot to release back in the day! next up is broken document which delivers lovely warm analogue chords and pads interlaced with an 808 groove. the b-side starts off with do it using various samples to great effect to culminate in a unique deep house sound. finishing things off in much the same territory is from another angle which again brings the warm chords and pads, but also brings to the table some really delicate synth lines to create a surreal effect.

check the guns are back with the second to last instalment in their tape edit series. it is onwards and upwards for 004 where side one sees a deconstructed work out of the fatback bands >the girl is so fine<. track 2 >house down< is a no holds barred party tune for the discerning dance floor that will do all the work for you. on the flip >sugar samba< is a rework of the london records classic from julia and co. finishing off we have an edit of heatwaves >super soul sister< which is a gem of a vocal funk track that gives as good as it gets and leaves you wanting more.

with their feet firmly positioned on dutch soil, the heads and hearts of dam swindle are nonetheless rooted deep into the soul of the motor city, and this ep of finely crafted grooves on jimmy posters and huxleys fledgling saints & sonnets imprint is as brilliant a reflection of their obsession as you could expect. >the wrap around< combines a killer vocal hook with a silky line, but its the bassline that marks it out, coming in with a thudding bassline that twists itself into all manner of unfiltered goodness at the halfway point. >pain tomorrow< meanwhile prefers to let its skipping percussion do the talking with a bumping chord led groove that would put mcde to shame. the ep is rounded off with a killer remix of the title track from deleusions of grandeurs pattern select, turning in a sparse reworking which transforms the light original into a throbbing piece of basement house.

one of the labels that caught our eye in the last months was lonesome hero. here their third release and its another quality one. a more then solid house track that kicks off with an intoxicating metalic bassline that hypnotically segues into the rasundas staple groove-heavy drums, with an achingly timeless piano peppered all over the top. on the flip-side, the boys over at campaign of love handle the remix duties. by tracking it out a bit, col have roughed up the original with a combination of strings and 909 snares, while keeping the spirit of the original mix alive with a snippet of its massive bassline.

second release on the wonderful supafrico records digs up and dusts off four more mega-rare nuggets of superb afro funk. first up is the excellent afro disco groove of kabbalas ashewo ara, a lost gem originally released back in 82 on tiny uk independent red flame and now featuring highly on many collectors wants lists. next is buaris im ready, a chunk of pure dancefloor dynamite with a driving disco groove and great funky synths, taken from the ghanian singer and percussionists awesome 1979 disco soccer lp. on the flip we get the mega-rare and totally essential body & soul, a magnificent 10 minute mid-tempo afro workout recorded in 1980 by nigerian funkster william onyeabor. last up is a great extended edit of the ashantis brilliant funky bubbler everybodys groove with its floor-filling groove and wicked vocals. these lovingly remastered rarities sound better than ever making this ep a must for anyone with a taste for those incredible funky afro grooves.
